Jaguar’s return to major international endurance racing under Tom Walkinshaw’s TWR organisation was one of the defining stories of late 1980s motorsport, and the XJR-9’s victory at the 1988 24 Hours of Daytona was its opening statement of intent. Martin Brundle, Raul Boesel, and John Nielsen shared the No. 60 car across the Floridian night and morning to take outright victory at Daytona International Speedway — a result that announced the 7.0-litre V12-powered XJR-9 as a genuine challenger to the dominant Porsche 962s that had been the car to beat in endurance racing throughout the decade.
For Brundle, already established in Formula 1 and recognised as one of Britain’s most complete racing drivers, the Daytona victory added endurance racing credentials to a CV of considerable depth. For Jaguar and TWR, it was the first step in a programme that would culminate in Le Mans victory later that same season — 1988 becoming the year in which the XJR-9 announced itself as the finest endurance racing car in the world. WERK83’s 1:18 diecast model captures the No. 60 winning car at 25cm in length with openable doors and working wheels, presented with a collector’s box.
