Paul Schrader’s 1980 film American Gigolo gave the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL one of its most memorable screen appearances — a car that perfectly suited the world Richard Gere’s character inhabits, a Los Angeles of wealth, surface glamour, and moral ambiguity in which a luxury German roadster was both practical transport and personal statement. The US market specification of the R107 differed from its European counterpart in its bumper treatment and equipment levels, reflecting the regulatory requirements of the American market, and by 1979 the 450 SL had matured into one of the most polished luxury roadsters available at any price.
