Automotive leather is generally firmer than furniture upholstery leather.

The added firmness helps it perform well in vehicle interiors and other applications where durability matters. If you're making very soft handbags or projects that require a leather with a lot of drape, upholstery leather may be a better choice.

The Dark Purple hide is the exception and has a noticeably softer, more flexible feel similar to premium upholstery leather.
