The SS Republic was a 19th-century sidewheel steamship that sank in a hurricane off the Georgia coast on October 25, 1865. It is most famous for carrying a vast treasure of gold and silver coins intended for post-Civil War reconstruction, which was discovered 1,700 feet deep in 2003.
