This vibrant bowl displays all the hallmarks of the celebrated ceramic potteries in Vallauris situated in the foothills behind Cannes and Golf Juan on the Cote D'Azur. Pottery has been made there since ancient times, but was made famous by Pablo Picasso who created a huge body of work there between 1948 and 1955.
This bowl is signed VALLAURIS to the base, and is unusual in that it takes the form of an artist's palette with a thumb hole to the left of the body. Central to the design is a large shell motif to one side of the thumb hole.
Glazed in yellow ochre on a white ground, the signed base left unglazed. Of particular interest is the distinctive speckled lava glaze being the same as that favoured by the celebrated Vallauris potter Marius Giuge. IMAGES 8, 9 &, 15-19.
Having not been signed by a specific factory in Vallauris, the pot is unattributed.
