Beautiful Original Vintage Shelley Fine Bone China Tea Set for Two

This beautiful piece was produced by Shelley Potteries of Staffordshire, England, one of the most respected names in British fine bone china.

Item Details

Maker: Shelley Potteries England

Pattern: "Charm" (Blue Ground Variation)

Pattern Number: 13767 / 13

Welcome to an absolute treasure for fine English bone china enthusiasts! This gorgeous 7-piece partial morning tea service is presented in the elusive Shelley "Charm" pattern (No. 13767/13). Logged into the historic Stoke-on-Trent pattern books around 1952–1953, this post-war "Bestware" release represents the pinnacle of mid-century British ceramic craftsmanship.
This specific variant features striking, vibrant cornflower-blue blossom transfers accented by soft grey foliage. Unlike common stark white variants, pattern 13767 features the floral sprays layered over a solid, dreamy pastel baby-blue border and ground color. The fractional suffix "/13" explicitly designates the factory-matched solid ice-blue handles and rims. The cups are molded in the wide, elegant fluted "Dorothy" shape, showcasing a graceful silhouette that collectors actively seek out.

Questions are always welcome if additional information is required.

The Story Behind Shelley, Wileman & Foley

A Remarkable Chapter in British Ceramic History

To many collectors of English china, Shelley represents one of the most admired and recognisable names in British ceramic history. The company occupies a fascinating position in the world of fine bone china because it spans several important design periods and artistic movements, leaving behind a legacy that continues to attract collectors worldwide many decades after production ceased.

The story began in the famous pottery district of Staffordshire, England, often described as the historical heart of British ceramics. The company evolved from Wileman & Co. and Foley Potteries, eventually becoming known internationally as Shelley Potteries Ltd.

What makes Shelley especially interesting is that the company developed through several generations of changing design tastes. Their production journey stretched from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods through Art Nouveau and into the highly collectable Art Deco years and post-war modern design.

Unlike many large manufacturers whose priority was volume production, Shelley developed a reputation for combining:

Many collectors still comment today on how Shelley pieces feel in the hand?light, refined and delicate-looking while remaining practical for everyday use.

Interesting Shelley Facts

More than 137 documented cup shapes

Shelley and Wileman became famous for extraordinary variety. Published collector references currently document more than 137 different cup shapes, ranging from traditional Victorian styles to highly stylised Art Deco designs. New examples and variations still occasionally emerge and are identified by collectors today.

To put that into perspective, many china manufacturers are primarily remembered for a relatively small number of iconic forms, whereas Shelley built an entire collecting world around shape variation itself.

Some famous examples include:

Certain collectors focus entirely on shape collecting rather than pattern collecting.

Thousands of decorative patterns

Shelley and Wileman produced thousands of documented decorative patterns, identified by names and pattern numbers.

Some patterns appeared on only a few shapes, while others appeared repeatedly over long periods.

For example:

This enormous variety is one reason collectors often specialise in:

Some shapes survived for decades ? others for only months

The famous Dainty cup shape became one of Shelley's greatest successes and remained in production for approximately 70 years, from 1896 until 1966.

By comparison, some other shapes had very short lives.

The Princess shape reportedly remained in production for only around three months during 1933, making examples significantly less commonly encountered.

Shelley quality grades

Shelley also produced different quality grades, with "Best" or "First Ware" representing the highest inspected standard.

This emphasis on quality control contributed to the reputation the company developed among retailers and collectors.

Is Shelley Considered Good China?

There is no official worldwide ranking table for porcelain or fine china manufacturers.

However, within British ceramics, Shelley is generally regarded as one of the important historic names in fine bone china and is particularly admired among:

Shelley is often appreciated not simply because of age, but because of the combination of:

Are Shelley Pieces Rare?

Not every Shelley piece is rare.

However, rarity can increase significantly when several factors combine:

Like many antique and vintage china items, these pieces were originally created for everyday use. Over decades, many examples were broken, damaged or separated from their original sets.

As a result, complete matching examples surviving in strong condition naturally become harder to encounter.

Earlier Wileman, Foley and Pre-Shelley examples are often particularly interesting because they represent the foundation years of what later became one of Britain's most respected names in fine china.

Although Shelley production ended in 1966, collectors around the world continue to actively collect and study these pieces today.

Owning a Shelley item is therefore not simply owning a cup or saucer?it is owning a small part of the history of British ceramic craftsmanship.

Postage & Packaging

All items are packed extremely carefully and securely.

My feedback consistently mentions the quality of packaging and care taken when shipping fragile china.

Where possible I use eBay Simple Delivery, helping provide protection for both buyer and seller regarding loss or transit damage.

This also applies where available for international shipping.

I always try to find the best available postage option and cost - And said that I almost always use Royal Mail.

If unsure, please simply send a message and I will gladly help.

Returns

Due to the fragile nature of vintage and antique china, I generally do not accept returns as additional movement naturally increases the risk of damage.

However, I always try to approach situations fairly and individually should any genuine concern arise.

Please contact me before leaving feedback if there are any questions or concerns
