This is a portrait of Louis IV known as Outremer, king of the Franks.

Louis IV known as “Outremer” (920/921–September 10, 954), son of Charles the Simple and Eadgifu of Wessex, grew up in England before being recalled in 936 and crowned king in Laon. His reign took place under the ascendancy of Duke Hugues the Great, whose alliance and emancipation he sought in turn, while relying on his mother Gerberge of Saxony, sister of Otto I. Captured in 945 near Rouen after an intervention in Normandy, he was handed over to Hugh then released in 946 following strong German-Lotharingian political and military pressure; narrative documentation (Flodoard de Reims, then Richer) sheds light on these episodes. He tried several times to regain a foothold in Lotharingia, without lasting success against the Ottonians. Louis died accidentally in Reims on September 10, 954, after a fall from his horse, and was buried in Saint-Remi; his son Lothaire succeeds him. His kingship, marked by shifting loyalties and campaigns in Neustria and Normandy, nevertheless maintained Carolingian continuity in West Francia.
