Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Portuguese India 1881 1/8 Rupia Coin Brooch
A wonderful antique Victorian sterling silver coin brooch, beautifully formed from four original Portuguese India 1/8 Rupia silver coins, also known as Oitavo de Rupia, each dated 1881.
The coins were issued during the reign of King Luiz I of Portugal and were minted for circulation in Portuguese territories in India, including Goa. Each coin displays the Portuguese royal coat of arms to the front, with the portrait of King Luiz I facing inward on the reverse side of the brooch.
The four coins are arranged in a striking quatrefoil formation and mounted within an ornate tested sterling silver frame, decorated with applied beadwork, rope twist detailing and raised silver bosses to the centre. The overall effect is wonderfully decorative, with a strong Victorian character and a fascinating colonial-era numismatic interest.
Portuguese India coin jewellery is particularly appealing as it brings together several collecting areas in one piece — antique jewellery, Victorian silverwork, world coinage, Portuguese colonial history and Indian trade history. The silver coins themselves are high-grade silver, struck in .917 fineness, a standard chosen to align closely with British Indian silver coinage of the period.
The brooch fastens with a traditional ‘C’ style clasp and secure pin, entirely in keeping with its Victorian age.
The brooch comes with the brand new gift box shown, supplied by us for safe postage and/or gifting purposes.

A highly unusual and beautifully decorative Victorian coin brooch with real historical charm.
