These are fast-growing evergreen trees that produce thousands of cherry-sized purple fruit that taste somewhat like jamun (java plum) but sweeter. It is used in the Caribbean to produce jams, sauces, pies, etc., but most famously for a holiday rum-based liqueur. They're best eaten fresh when the skin of the fruit appears completely dark purple/black.
These can be grown and fruited in a large pot indoors in cooler climates, but do well in zones 9-11 in the ground. They will need to be protected from harsh sun and frosts when young, but after a few years growth, are quite hardy and low-no maintenance in zones 9-11.
