Offered for your consideration is an outstanding pair of vintage CANTON Plus XL speakers, manufactured in Germany c.1999. As you may know, CANTON was founded in West Germany and began producing speakers in 1973. With their attention to detail, build quality, and incredible sound, CANTON is widely recognized as one of the world’s premier speaker companies.
The Plus XL are capable, modest-sized speakers that feature a two-way, bass-reflex (ported) design with 130mm (5” nominal) mid/bass woofers and 25mm (1”) dome tweeters, both made by CANTON. Those quality drivers are housed in attractive, rigid ivory white polymer enclosures, with enameled steel grilles, that measure 9½” tall x 6¼” wide x 6” deep and integrate nicely with just about any listening room décor.

This pair of CANTON Plus XL speakers is in clean, excellent condition. The enclosures have no cracks, dings, chips, nicks, or scratches, just some practically invisible marks—if any—from use through the years. Even the bottoms are remarkably free of scuffs since the original owner had the forethought to apply the optional clear rubber bumpers! Plus, the removable metal grilles are in great shape with no blemishes noted and both CANTON-logo grille emblems are in great shape as well. These speakers were exceptionally well cared-for, and it shows.
What’s more, all four drivers are perfect. The dome tweeters have flawless radiating surfaces and unharmed faceplates while the woofers’ sturdy paper cones and voice coil center caps are just as nice. Plus, the woofers have rubber surrounds that are effectively permanent. I suspect that the first time the grilles have been off was for these photos, so the drivers were well-protected all these years.
Also, the recessed metal binding post terminals hold large gauge speaker cable securely and can accommodate banana plugs or angled pin terminations. And, the enclosures feature threaded inserts for wall mounts. It’s a very well thought-out design, overall.
Most importantly, as you’d expect from CANTON, the Plus XL’s sound fantastic. They are accurate and uncolored with a fast, detailed midrange, sparkling airy highs rated to an impressive 30kHz, and solid bass output for speakers this reasonably-sized.
The CANTON Plus XL cost $450/pair over 25 years ago and are some of the nicest-sounding bookshelf-sized speakers I’ve ever owned. For those who haven’t heard CANTON, the first impression is immediate and significant—you’ll be impressed by how nice the Plus XL sound!
