Electric Guitar

Used - Fair, but Playable Condition

The Gibson SG Pro was introduced in June 1971 to replace the SG Special as part of a controversial overhaul of the SG lineup. This was because it marked some significant departures from traditional SG features...a front-routed control cavity (in '72 Gibson started transitioning back the Special with a back routed control cavity, which this guitar has), zero degree neck pitch, deeper set neck, and a Les Paul style pickguard (this one's missing its pickguard). Yet, many of the features that these models are commonly associated with were not actually new, for example the SG had a narrow 1-9/16" nut since 1966, a laminated neck since mid-1969, and a volute since 1970. However, public reception would cause the Pro to be quickly discontinued and the Special to return in mid-1972. The Pro remained on price lists until October 1972 and 25 units were shipped from 1973-1974 as remaining supply was sold off. The Pro was notably the first SG to use the new Harmonica bridge design, which would find its way onto the Standard and Custom in mid to late 1972. But before that, it used a design not seen on any other model, which resembled an open-ended wrench in how it fit around the posts. The Natural finish, like this guitar, was the least common option, only accounting for about 10% of SG Pros shipped...so get this one while you can!

Cosmetic and Functionality Description

Body: this guitar has a lot of cool looking wear and tear, or character as we like to call it...scuff marks, scratches, dings, dents, and wear/chips in the lacquer can be seen on the top, back, and sides--heavy buckle rash; the pickguard is missing and the electronics cover has some easily noticeable scratches, plus one of the screws is missing from the electronics cover

Neck, Fretboard, and Headstock: the fretboard has some light scratches on it that should not affect playability; the back of the neck shows almost the same wear in the lacquer as found on the body, plus a number of scratches and small dings are present, but these should not affect comfort or playability; this guitar has had an obvious headstock repair with a screw used in the repair; the back and sides of the headstock show some wear/chips in the lacquer as well as some noticeable scuff marks, scrapes, and dings while the front headstock overlay just has some scratches on it and some small cracking in the lacquer around the Gibson logo

Action and Playability: the action is nice and low and the truss rod functions properly, the treble side of the neck is slightly warped causing some extremely light buzzing in the first three frets, mainly on the G,B, and e strings

Frets: moderate to heavy wear with some grooves forming the frets...heavy in the first frets and getting moderate to light on up to the 10th fret

Hardware: the Bigsby arm is missing a washer so the arm is "floppy"--the Bigsby works, but you have to push the arm further to get it to engage; all the hardware has lost a lot of the lustre in the finish, but all works properly, even the low E tuner is a little bent, but still functions properly

Electronics: all functions flawlessly; the bridge pickup has been replaced with what we think is a '70s Dimarzio Super Distortion humbucker; all the pots and the selector switch have been replaced

Includes: electric guitar (original pots, selector switch, bridge pickup, pickguard, and case/gig bag not included)
