Antonio Stradivari, all the greatest violin makers of all time, has been recognized for over 200 years. His development in violin design, coupled with excellent craftsmanship and superior materials, has produced instruments that have never been surpassed in tone and appearance. His career spanned 71 years.

He was born around 1644 near Cremona. He is traditionally credited as a student of Nicolo Amati. Stradivari moved to Cremona’s Santo Domingo gallery in 1680, and from then on his work became more consistent and abundant. Over the next 20 years, he gradually broke away from Amati’s influence, initially producing violins based on Amati’s model, but conceptually stronger, then attempting a brand new form — the “long pattern” of the 1690s. This was undoubtedly to achieve the richness of tone achieved by makers from the 16th and 17th centuries in Brescia.

Stradivari eventually found the ideal model he had been seeking in 1699, and the “Lady Tennant” is an early example of Stradivari’s so-called “Golden Period”. At this time, Stradivari was at his peak, producing instruments characterized by the width of the model and the flatness of the belly, along with a flame-like maple back, and the incredible red varnish, which were the trademarks of his best works.
