This is an original antique advertising circular for the Bazzi – Bianchi Phonendoscope issued by the company’s United States distributor Barlett, Garvens & Co. of Richmond, Virginia. This circular measures about 13” x 9.25” and is printed with descriptive information and “Directions for Outlining The Various Organs” on one side and the graphic illustrations of how to use this device on the other side. The flyer isn’t dated but comes with a letter on Bartlett, Garvens & Co. letterhead dated July 26, 1899. The graphic illustrations are captioned in Italian, English, German and French language and the text on verso is all in English.
The Smithsonian has an example of one of these which is described on their website as:
A phonendoscope is a binaural stethoscope that amplifies sound by means of two parallel resonating plates. The form was introduced by Italian physicians Eugenio Bazzi and Aurelio Bianchi in 1894…This example may have been made by Martin Wallach, a medical and surgical instrument maker with shops in Cassel, Germany, and in Rome, Italy. Wallach applied for a U.S. trademark for the term “PHONENDOSCOPE” in 1897.
This advertising circular is an original antique sent out by Bartlett, Garvens & Co. in July 1899. Overall condition is very good with moderate handling wear and some toning from age. Email any questions. Thanks for looking.
