Giant Triton (Charonia tritonis)

Charonia tritonis, commonly known as the giant triton or Triton’s trumpet, is a large marine gastropod mollusc in the family Charoniidae. It can grow up to 60 cm (2 feet) in shell length, making it one of the largest sea snails in the world and the largest in Hawaiian waters. 

This is a very beautiful and large triton shell. The only deficiency on the shell is the spire. A small section of the spire is missing. Apart from that, the rest of the shell is in complete condition. It's a very beautiful piece with its lovely ribbed texture found throughout the spiral shape of the shell. The canvas colour or base colour of the entire shell is a beautiful vintage tan light green colour.    In between the ridges created by the spiral of the shell on the surface are randomly placed, irregularly shaped spots of a darker brown. Some of these look like a square and some look like a V. Just depends on the area of the shell as to the strange shape of the dark brown. 

The underside of the shell is well formed, very beautiful. The aperture or the mouth opening is well flared. The left side of the aperture has toothed ribbon, which consists of deeply indented straight lines that look similar to the shape of eyelashes. On the right side of the aperture is a well defined perimeter with various points. So there are, similar to the dots, brown dots on the outside of the shell on the surface, there are brown lines on the inside of the aperture which look very beautiful. All up the mouth is very distinct and very stunning in appearance. 

On the right side of the shell there seems to be a overlap like a layer of shell. This is about 10cm long. There is a small overlap on the left side of the shell too which is not as obvious. The construction of the seashell is very beautiful with the colours are very intricate and elegant and very beautiful to gaze upon.
