'Coreless Swirl' Marble.

An attractive handmade swirl with a ground pontil dating it from 1880 to 1920.

This type of marble was handmade by craftsmen in German glass factories. They usually have an open, light-filled character with a 'coreless' base matrix of clear or translucent coloured glass; and a layer of bands on the exterior. The clear base type are a classic Coreless Swirl while the translucent coloured base are known as 'Maypole' marbles (Baumann, 4th edition 'Collecting Antique Marbles').

These marbles have a classic and refined character, making a combination of subtle hues and delicate design that is reminiscent of the contemporaneous art deco movement of the early 20th C.
