Marx Johnny West Vintage Mexican Plastimarx Figure with repro box and accessories.

Figure is a rare vintage 1975 blue (purple-blue) Johnny West in very good condition with wear and so many hair rubs he doesn’t really have any paint left on his head. I will add a reissue head as well. Comes with unused reissue accessories as shown. The soft gear bag has been torn open. Also includes a reproduction one-piece box and a copy of the equipment manual.

Note on Plastimarx: Plastimarx was Louis Marx’s company in Mexico. He owned 51% of the company while his Mexican partner owned the rest. Every year, Marx would choose molds from his U.S. plants and have them sent to the Mexican factory where they used their injection machines to make the toys. Marx himself chose what to send and his partners found out what toys they were making when the molds arrived. There were at least two vintage series of Johnny West toys made and sold in Mexico. The first came in the 1960s and did not have a name—so collectors just call them the first editions. Those boxes are simply impossible to find—a reproduction of the Johny (Mexico left out an “n” in his name on the first edition box and manual but restored it in 1975) West box was made from one seen in an old video seen online and there has been one other box in the series found. The Lo Mejor Del Oeste series was released in 1975 and included versions of most of the 1974 Best Of The West and 1975 Johnny West Adventure lines made in the USA. The Mexican versions are mostly different from those in the USA, with different colors of bodies and often different colors of accessories. Plastimarx figures are rare and the loose figures typically sell in the $100-$200 range just by themselves. The vintage accessories are even harder to find than the figures and having any vintage pieces drives up the price. The vintage boxes are rarest of all and, with some of them, collectors know of only one box in existence. A figure and accessories in one of the most common of the vintage boxed sets typically sells for $500 or more. Some of the rarer ones sell for $1500 and the rarest have sold for $2500 or more. Fortunately, there are reproduction boxes and reissue accessories to make it possible to have a vintage figure in a boxed set and at a less expensive price.
