Jim Edmunds

Jim Edmonds is a defensive legend (with 8 Gold Gloves) who is widely considered one of the biggest "snubs" in Hall of Fame history. It’s a point of massive frustration for baseball fans. Edmonds was arguably the best defensive center fielder of his generation (aside from Andruw Jones) and had elite power, yet he was dropped from the Hall of Fame ballot after only one year (2016) because he didn't receive the required 5% of the vote.

The "Why" boils down to three things:

  1. The "Logjam": He hit the ballot during a time when it was crowded with legends like Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Piazza, and Jeff Bagwell. Voters were limited to 10 picks and simply "ran out of room."

  2. Injuries: His aggressive defensive style (the diving catches he was famous for) led to many injuries. He "only" had 1,949 hits, and voters historically obsessed over the 2,000 or 3,000 hit milestones.

  3. Late Peak: He didn't become a true superstar until he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals at age 30. While his peak was incredible, voters often favor players who are stars for 15+ years.

The Comparison:

By almost every modern metric (especially WAR), Edmonds is a Hall of Famer. Many experts believe the Contemporary Era Committee will eventually right this wrong and induct him in the future.
