Antique Pistol Grip Leather Draw Gauge / Strap Cutter Tool

A Masterpiece of Traditional Leatherworking Engineering.

Before the era of automated machinery, saddlers, harness makers, and shoemakers relied on specialized, heavy-duty hand tools to process raw leather hides. This antique Pistol Grip Draw Gauge is a perfect example of that early engineering. Designed to cut long, perfectly uniform strips of leather (such as belts, horse reins, or bag straps), this tool features a heavy forged iron/steel body mated to an ergonomic wooden handle shaped like a pistol grip, allowing the craftsman to exert significant pulling force.

Physical & Technical Description:
The tool consists of a fixed handle assembly and a sliding measurement bar. The metal slide bar features engraved measurement graduations. Mounted on this bar is a sliding block that holds a sharp cutting blade. A large, textured iron thumbscrew allows the user to lock the sliding block tightly in place at the exact measurement required. It measures 5.5" x 6" and weighs a solid 12.1 oz (343g).

⚙️ How Was This Tool Used?

The draw gauge is brilliantly simple but highly effective for cutting uniform straps:

  1. Setting the Width: The craftsman loosens the thumbscrew and slides the blade block along the graduated bar to the exact width needed for the strap (e.g., 1.5 inches), then locks it down tight.
  2. Preparing the Hide: The large piece of raw leather must first have one perfectly straight edge cut into it.
  3. The "Draw": The craftsman places the straight edge of the leather firmly against the metal guide (the flat part of the tool near the handle). They squeeze the pistol grip, push the leather into the blade, and smoothly pull (or "draw") the entire tool toward their body.
  4. The Result: As the tool is drawn back, the guide rides along the straight edge of the hide, forcing the blade to slice off a continuous, perfectly parallel strap of leather.

Antique Condition. Unrestored.

  • Metal Components: The iron/steel has a deep, dark antique patina with expected surface oxidation and rust from age. The thumbscrew turns and locks properly. The blade is present but dull; it will require sharpening or replacement if you intend to use it for modern leathercraft.
  • Wooden Handle: The pistol grip is smooth from decades of honest use. Note: There is a noticeable drying crack running along the rounded butt of the handle (see photos), but the handle remains firmly attached and structurally sound.
