GM VATS systems use 15 different resistor values. Your vehicle will only start with the correct VATS key value.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR VATS NUMBER

Using a multimeter:

1. Set the meter to the Ohms (Ω) setting

2. Touch one probe to each side of the resistor pellet

3. Compare your reading to the chart below

4. Choose the closest matching value

Example:
A reading near 1.13 kΩ would use VATS #5.

ABOUT GM VATS / PASS-Key

GM introduced the Vehicle Anti-Theft System (VATS) in the mid-1980s to help prevent unauthorized vehicle starting. These systems use a resistor pellet embedded in the ignition key. The vehicle’s security module checks the resistor value before allowing the engine to start.

If the wrong resistor value is detected:
• The security light may illuminate
• The starter may disable
• Fuel delivery may be interrupted

COMMON VATS ISSUES

• Dirty resistor pellet
• Worn ignition cylinder contacts
• Broken ignition wires
• Incorrect key resistance value

Helpful tip:
If the SECURITY light appears and the vehicle will not start, clean the resistor pellet and wait several minutes before retrying.
