Description: REVIEW
After two albums fronting Silage, Lance Black and Damian Horne have taken the road to reinvention, hanging up their former band like an old coat and re-emerging as the coolly polished Parkway.

Todd Collins and F. Reid Shippen, who molded Silage's Vegas Car Chasers into a meaty slab of Dove-nominated alterna-rock, head the effort again, leading the band through 13 cuts that range from pop metal to Top 40. Along the way, there are detours into hip-hop-including a guest rap from KJ-52-but the overall vibe is painted in earth tones. The worshipful "Your Love Surrounds Me," with vocals from Jars of Clay's Dan Haseltine, builds on acoustic guitar strums, gently tinkling piano and a gliding Black vocal. Acoustic guitar also drives the moody "In Your Way" and "Soothe Me," where Horne implores God to "rule me as I stray from you..." over a hypnotic drum track.

Even when Parkway turns up the volume, it evokes maximum cool. "3-Way Light" starts with a quirky, effected riff before layering beds of raw, overdriven guitars behind the chorus. "Musical Hawaii" features an artful coda reminiscent of Mercury-era Prayer Chain, and "Save Today" evokes the quieter side of Smashing Pumpkins.

Topically, Horne and Black avoid the more obscure metaphors from their Silage days and address loyalty, yearning for God and other hefty topics. Particularly inventive is "Found Me Out," with its dialog about a hidden sin-another strong point in an exceptional debut. -- Anthony DeBarros (c) 2000 CCM Communications, Inc. --
