Though the Olympic games entered the new millennium in Australia, you can bring the torch home to your computer with Sydney 2000. Featuring athletes from 32 countries, the game offers competition in 12 events: 100-meter sprint, 110-meter hurdles, hammer toss, javelin throw, triple jump, high jump, 100-meter freestyle swimming, sprint cycling, skeet shooting, weightlifting, 10-meter platform diving, and the kayak K1 slalom. There are coaching and Olympic modes for the serious video athlete, as well as an arcade mode for those who want to go straight for the gold. Rich, 3-D graphics and motion-captured animation of real Olympic contenders bring the game's virtual athletes to life, and Sydney 2000 lets you compete against up to seven others via the separately sold Multi Tap.

Every four years, the Olympic games come and go, and every four years, developers and publishers alike produce computer games based on the Olympics. The good thing for gamers is that with every four years, the games get better. Sydney 2000, by Eidos, is no exception.

With 12 Olympic events, 32 countries represented, and a number of gaming options ranging from classic arcade mode to a career-based Olympic mode, this CD-ROM is a far cry from the days of Daley Thompson's Decathlon. As you would expect, graphically the game has improved 10-fold on the game titles that were present at the last Olympics. The races now actually look different from each other; each has its own individual style.

Although the graphics have improved, the gameplay is still the same tested-and-tried approach that comes with every track-and-field game. This normally involves bashing the heck out of the controller or putting you in a mad frenzy in an attempt to get your runner or cyclist around the track in a suitable time.

But do not fear, for not all the events are based on this format. Featured are the 100-meter sprint, 110-meter hurdles, hammer, javelin, triple jump, 100-meter freestyle swimming, Olympic sprint cycling, skeet shooting, superheavyweight lifting, 10-meter platform diving, and kayak K1 slalom to challenge you on both precision as well as speed. --Stuart Miles,
