For sale - A replica, fully working, Steam Whistle for the vintage SEL / Merit 1550 'Major' steam engine.
The whistle is made as per the original, apart from the lever, which I've machined from tough bronze instead of brass. Normally the original weak brass lever is where this whistle broke ! The rest of the whistle is in brass with a standard 3BA mounting thread. The size and form of this Whistle is that of the original SEL Whistle. It will be supplied with a new 'red fibre' sealing washer.
Please note, that if you require the whistle to have a non-standard mounting thread, for example; a 1/4" BSF thread to allow use on a Mamod engine, I can supply ! Please inquire to see if I can help and, if so, advise on cost.
The whistle is in full, leak tight, working order. When tested on compressed air at 12 psi, it produces a good sharp whistle !
The 2 last photos show the Whistle mounted on one of my 'work in progress' SEL 1550 'Major' Engines. The other is of the new replica Whistle, along side an original SEL made Whistle ------- This engine shown is NOT part of this auction !
I've had to make several of these Whistles, for Engines I have awaiting restoration. With this kind of item, I always make extra to sell as spares. I haven't got that many available So if you want one, get in quick before they've gone !
Postage is for UK Mainland only, but if required I'll be happy to post over-seas. If so, please contact for postage price details.
Note; If the whistle should develop a leak, due to dirt contamination in the water, or that oil hasn't been added to water prior to steaming (it's a moving part, so needs lubrication as much as the pistons). The inlet port is formed with an internal 10BA thread, to allow fitting a 10BA Blanking Screw.
