NGC XF Antoninianus of Valerian I AD253-260
Valerian is chiefly remembered for his persecution of Christians and his subsequent capture and death. His rule unfolded during the "crises of the third century" (235-284), a tumultuous period marked by 25 different emperors. According to Eutropius, writing between 364 and 378 AD, Valerian was overthrown by Shapur, the king of Persia, and endured years of ignominious slavery among the Parthians. Lactantius, an early Christian source, claimed that Valerian suffered great indignities at the hands of his captors, including being used as a human footstool by Shapur. Lactantius asserted that, after enduring such treatment for an extended period, Valerian offered a substantial ransom for his release. However, Shapur allegedly killed Valerian by compelling him to swallow molten gold.
