Herod Archelaus, a son of Herod the Great, ruled as ethnarch over Samaria, Judaea, and Idumea—including the cities of Caesarea and Jaffa—from 4 BC to AD 6, during Jesus’ early childhood. Due to his unpopularity among the Jewish people, he was deposed by the Roman emperor Augustus when Judaea was reorganized as a Roman province under direct rule, around the time of the Census of Quirinius. He is often considered a possible inspiration for the Parable of the Minas in Luke 19.
