Original engraving proof signed with initials in the plate and signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. An example in the final state
as published by the Twenty-one Gallery in 1928. Numbered 69/75, reference Campbell Dodgson catalogue 76. Printed on a sheet of cream laid hand-made paper c.300 x 220 mm. Mounted in acid free mount boards c. 420 x 295 mm. The plate, begun in July1927 was not finished until the Autumn of 1928. It was exhibited at the Painter Etchers and at the Royal Academy in 1929. After the edition of 75, the plate was destroyed. The upper half of the figure is a portrait of a friend of the artist, Mrs.Parr. An excellent impression of one of the artists most famous plates in fine condition.
Robert Sargent Austin studied at the Leicester School of Art (1909-13) and at the RCA (1914,1919-22).began teaching engraving at the Royal College of Art (1926-44) becoming Professor of Graphic Design (1948-55). He was elected ARE (1921);RE (1928);PRE (1962);RWS (1930);PRWS (1956);ARA (1939);RA (1949). He exhibited RA;RWS; Collections of his work held BM; Ashmolean;Tate; V & A; Fitzwilliam.
