Hand signed approximately 4x6 inch photo by World War II vet, Anderson Wilson.
Anderson Wilson was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, famously known as the Ghost Army, a top-secret unit during World War II that used inflatable tanks, sound effects, and radio deception to fool German forces. Enlisting in 1943 at age 19 (some sources say 20), Wilson was part of the initial group of 52 men who grew to 1,100, with the unit's mission remaining classified until 1996.
Wilson, who lived in Slidell, Louisiana, served as a clerk-typist and was part of an advance unit that landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day before the rest of the army followed. He kept the details of his service a secret for decades, even leaving the Veterans of Foreign Wars because he could not discuss his experiences, until the mission was declassified.
Key details about his service and legacy include:
Deception Tactics: The unit created the illusion of 30,000 troops using inflatable equipment and sound recordings to draw German fire away from real Allied forces, potentially saving 30,000 to 40,000 American lives.
Operations: Wilson noted that most operations were conducted 100–300 yards from the front line at night, yet the unit suffered very few casualties.
