Common situations in which rubber transmission components need to be replaced
✳️The motor belt is aging or broken
The motor belt is the core component that drives the lead shaft and the tape reel. After long-term use, rubber will harden, crack or break due to oxidation and thermal aging, resulting in the tape cannot be dragged normally, and there will be "time and no turn", intermittent sound or complete silence during playback. Especially in recorders that have not been used for a long time, belt aging is the primary cause of failure
✳️.The rubber ring of the press pulley is worn or hardened
The pulley is bonded to the leading shaft through the rubber surface and uses friction to drive the tape. When the rubber is worn, deformed, or loses elasticity, the friction between the pulley and the dominant shaft is insufficient, causing the tape to slip and the tape not moving forward even when the motor is running normally. Some data point out that insufficient pressure of the pressing pulley (less than 400g) is a common failure point
✳️.The aging of the wheels (idlers) leads to fast-forward/reverse failure
In some movements, the wheels are responsible for transmitting motor power for fast-forward and rewind functions. Its rubber surface will lose friction when it ages, causing the fast forward and reverse functions to fail, but the playback function may still work
✳️.Reverse tension belt aging
Some recorders, such as the center deck, are equipped with a reverse tension belt to maintain stable contact between the tape and the head. This belt aging and breaking can cause tape strip offset, twisted tape, or sound distortion during playback
✳️.Rubber parts "melt" or stick
The rubber material used in some old tape recorders will "melt" after long-term storage and become a viscous residue, which not only loses the transmission function, but also contaminates other parts of the movement, and must be thoroughly cleaned and replaced
Benefits of Replacement:
⭐️ Restore stable tape movement: Aging rubber drive components can cause tape instability, intermittent sounds, or tape jamming. Replacement ensures the tape runs smoothly and evenly, enhancing playback fluidity.
⭐️ Improve sound quality performance: Worn belts or pressure rollers can cause speed fluctuations, resulting in volume variations, distortion, or "buzzing" sounds. New components effectively reduce these disturbances, making the sound clearer and richer.
⭐️ Extend equipment lifespan: Timely replacement of worn parts prevents additional strain on core components like the capstan and motor, slowing overall mechanical wear.
⭐️ Improve operational reliability: Fast-forward, rewind, pause, and other functions rely on the transmission system to coordinate. The new rubber parts ensure smooth switching between modes, enhancing the user experience.
