Description:
The Porsche 956 was the dominant force in Group C endurance racing in the early 1980s — a car whose combination of aerodynamic ground effect, twin-turbocharged 2.65-litre flat-six engine, and the engineering depth of the Porsche factory programme made it effectively unbeatable at Le Mans across several consecutive years. The 1984 24 Hours saw the Joest Racing-entered No. 7 car take the outright victory, its three-driver crew bringing together Henri Pescarolo — France’s most celebrated endurance driver and a man whose connection with Le Mans spanned decades — with German specialist Klaus Ludwig, who had already established himself as one of the most dependable long-distance performers of the era, and Stefan Johansson, the Swedish driver who would go on to compete at the front of Formula 1 with Ferrari and McLaren.
The 1984 Le Mans was a Porsche procession — the top positions filled by 956s in various team configurations — but the Joest No. 7 was its leader, crossing the finish line after 24 hours of racing at the Circuit de la Sarthe having covered the distance that confirmed Porsche’s Group C supremacy. WERK83’s 1:18 diecast model captures the winning No. 7 car at approximately 26cm in length with openable doors, working wheels, and collector’s box.
