This item is a vintage Swiv-O-Dex inkwell base, manufactured by the Zephyr American Corporation.

• Material & Design: Made of black glass (often described as black amethyst glass, showing a purple hue in light), with a distinctive Art Deco design featuring concentric ribs and three protrusions to hold the spherical inkwell ( INKWELL NOT INCLUDED)

• Functionality: Designed as a “tip-proof” inkwell; the separate ball-shaped inkwell rotates within the base to allow easy access to ink without spilling.

• Manufacturer & Markings: Base is marked “Zephyr American Corp Swivodex Trade Mark Pat Pending New York, NY.”

• Era & History: Produced between the 1920s and 1940s. Invented by Hugo Neustadter (creator of the Rolodex). Many were issued to the U.S. Navy due to their non-spill design, useful on ships.

• Collectibility: Highly sought after by collectors of vintage office equipment, Art Deco glass, and early 20th-century desk accessories.
