December 1863 New Orleans “Due 3” soldier letter. Lt Applegate of the 120th Ohio Infantry back home to his friend John Armstrong of Wayne County Ohio. NPS has Applegate’s first name as Harvey. Applegate signs the letter to his friend John as “Rob.” A good portion of the 120th was made up of Wayne County Ohio men. Applegate was taken prisoner with parts of red 120th OVI while riding on a ship called the City Belle around Shreveport. They ran into a Confederate ambush. Some of the regiment escaped to the river bank. Lt Applegate and the other prisoners were taken to Camp Ford prison in Tyler Texas. Letter is about 8 by 10 inch.
