Here is a beautiful piece of Korite Ammolite, from the late Cretaceous, about 70 million years ago. From the Korite Ammolite Mine, Bearpaw Formation in Southern Alberta, Canada.  The photos were taken in bright light, typical for ammolite photos.

While red is considered a "common" color in ammolite—meaning it is frequently present in the color mix—it is almost never found as the only color.  Ammolite’s iridescence is caused by light diffraction through layers of aragonite, and a single specimen usually features multiple, shifting hues.  Red is usually caused by small layers, not one single big red layer.

 This specimen measures about 2.12”  (54.1  mm). at its widest.

Found on the shells of extinct ammonites, in 1981, ammolite was given official gemstone status by the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO).

The colors are gorgeous. Different colors can sometimes be seen at different angles, and with light at different angles, like the flash of labradorite.  A loupe makes it easier to see some of the colors.  We used 3 high-grade white lights (95% perfect white) when photographing this, the differences are in angle and amount of light, and angle of the specimen.

Return Policy:   If you are not satisfied with your item, please contact us within 72 hours of receiving the item.  We'll refund your purchase price, minus shipping charges, upon safe return of the item to us in original condition (item cannot be altered or damaged) within 30 days of buyer’s receipt of item.
