NGC VF Roman Double Denarius of Volusian AD251-253

Gaius Vibius Volusianus, more commonly known as Volusian, was a Roman emperor from AD 251-253. He was elevated to the rank of augustus (co-emperor) in AD 251 by his father Trebonianus Gallus, Volusianus had previously held the title of caesar but on the death of Hostilian in 251 he became augustus and ruled jointly with his father until 253.
The end of their reign began when the governor of Moesia Inferior, Aemilian, repelled a large gothic invasion and forcing them back across the Danube. His large army proclaimed Aemillian emperor and they marched on Rome. The troops of future emperor Valerian at the Rhine were too far away to intercede in time. Trebonianus Gallus and Volusianus were killed by their own troops who feared having to fight the superior army of Aemilian. They died in Umbria in August of AD 253.
