For Sale: A dinner plate with a transitional Art Nouveau / Art Deco multicolored floral design and gold edge. Dated 1927. Manufacturer: Wedgwood & Co, Ltd., England. Dimensions: 10 1/4” (diameter), 1lb, 1.6 oz. (weight.)

 

Note: This plate was not made by the original Wedgwood company, founded by Josiah Wedgwood in 1759. Wedgwood & Co, the maker of this plate, was a separate, unrelated company founded by Enoch Wedgwood in 1860.

 

Identifying Marks: backstamp: a unicorn head with “Estd1835 / WEDGWOOD & Co., Ld / England” (in black), “COMO” (pattern), “e(?)1144”)(pattern number), “4(?)” (both in red by hand). Stamped: “Wedgwood &Co.Ld”, “IVORY” (base color), “?” next to “9 over 27” (date stamp.)

Condition: Attractive but with noticeable wear and extensive crazing. There are the usual small manufacturing defects on the bottom surface. Please study the photos.

Definitions: *

“Antique” means at least 100 years old, while “Vintage” means at least 50 years old. Often, this is just my estimate and should not be taken as an expert assessment.

“Crazing” is a pattern of fine cracks that commonly develops in the glazing of ceramic items with age and thermal stress.
