Origin.
The Esan or Ishan people are an ethnic group of southern Nigeria who speak the Esan language. Esan is the more traditional name with 'Ishan' being a modern and Anglicized form of 'Esan'.

Use.
These masks are believed to have been used for societal initiation rites.
