NGC VF Antoninianus of Trajan Decius AD249-251
Decius, a respected leader during Philip the Arab's reign, became emperor after quashing a rebellion in Moesia. In 249, he defeated and killed Philip, earning Senate recognition. Decius aimed to strengthen Rome and its religion, initiating the Decian persecution that led to the death of prominent Christians. Co-ruling with his son Herennius Etruscus, both met their end in the Battle of Abritus against the Goths. In A.D. 249, Decius mandated sacrifices to the gods, launching the first empire-wide Christian persecution, departing from localized practices.
