The Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) was a historic American Class I railroad network that operated across the western and southwestern U.S. from 1865 to 1998, connecting cities from New Orleans to the Pacific Coast and serving 15 states, known for its vast network, land development, and role in westward expansion alongside the Central Pacific. Founded by the "Big Four" railroad builders, it became a massive system with diverse holdings in transportation, logistics (like PFE refrigerated cars), and land, eventually being absorbed by its rival, Union Pacific, in 1996, with operations continuing under the SP name until 1998.
