DESCRIPTION

 

 

Very scarce in all editions, this is the second edition of James Fordyce's expanded edition of David Fordyce's earlier 1757 work.

Scottish philosopher and enlightenment figure David Fordyce presents this educational allegory about virtue, rendered in verse, and intended to entertain the young.

ESTC T62594. The variant with the more lengthy cancelled dedication leaf.

A4, B-G8, H6. Collated, lacking the half title, and leaves H7 and H8, which refer to text pages 109-110, and a rear blank.

Bookplate of James S. Dearden to the front pastedown.

Scottish Presbyterian minister James Fordyce has provided additional material, a preface, and an introduction to this edition.

 

CONDITION

 

 

In a contemporary calf binding. Rubbing to back strip and board perimeters, with minor loss of calf to back strip head and tail. Small loss of calf towards head of front joint. Joints starting, with boards a touch tender. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Light handling marks to title page, with pages otherwise clean and bright. Lacking final text leaf.
