Plot Summary
The movie follows the story of Connie Doyle, an unwed and pregnant young woman who is homeless and alone after her boyfriend abandons her.
The Incident: By chance, Connie boards a train to Boston and meets a wealthy newlywed couple, Hugh and Patricia Winterbourne, who are also expecting a baby. A train crash ensues, and when Connie wakes up in the hospital, she has given birth to a son and is mistaken for the deceased Patricia Winterbourne because she was found wearing Patricia's wedding ring.
The Deception: With nowhere else to go and seeing an opportunity for a better life for her baby, Connie decides to continue the deception. She is welcomed into the wealthy Winterbourne family by the matriarch, Grace Winterbourne, who had never met her daughter-in-law. Connie also meets Hugh's identical twin brother, Bill, and they begin to develop feelings for each other.
The Conflict: Her new life is threatened when her abusive ex-boyfriend reappears to blackmail her, leading to a murder and a police investigation that eventually forces Connie to reveal the truth.
The film is loosely based on the 1948 American crime novel I Married a Dead Man by Cornell Woolrich, which was previously adapted into the film noir No Man of Her Own (1950).
