Performer Notes:
- There have been meetings of several trombonists on albums prior to this 2006 studio session for Steeplechase, though in the 21st century it is a bit atypical to hear three trombonists joined only by a rhythm section. But the combination of Conrad Herwig, Wycliffe Gordon and Vincent Gardner, backed by pianist Andy LaVerne, bassist Steve LaSpina (who is strangely listed playing organ on the back cover) and drummer Billy Drummond, makes for a solid group. Extended workouts of Lee Morgan's neglected blues "Kin Folks" and Charlie Shavers' "Undecided" (the perennial favorite of all star meetings) are obvious highlights. Their spirited rendition of Kenny Dorham's "Short Story" incorporates a whimsical repeated riff from the old chestnut "Topsy." The rousing take of "Lover, Come Back to Me" is obviously inspired by the trombone duo of J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding's famous recording, though their updated treatment is far more adventurous. A brief ballad medley allows for an individual feature by each trombonist. LaVerne's uplifting "Note Worthy" also proves to be an excellent vehicle for the horn players. ~ Ken Dryden
