SÜDERBRARUP 1921 "We Don't Want to be Danes" 50 Pfennig #4 German Notgeld

Under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, plebiscites were held in areas like Süderbrarup, allowing the residents to vote to become part of Denmark or Germany. The text on the top of the note reads: "We don't want to be Danes, we want to remain German." As if this weren't clear enough, the note depicts a scene from the Battle of Dybbøl during the Second Schleswig War in 1864, with the Danish flag being taken down by troops carrying the black-white-red flag of the German monarchy.

The German Empire flag the Prussian soldiers are carrying is an anachronism, it didn't exist until 1867, when Bismarck created it. It was also not Germany's flag in 1921 when the notes were issued, having been replaced in 1919 by the black-red-gold flag of the Weimar Republic. But the old flag remained a prominent symbol of German patriotism and nationalism, which is entirely the point here.
