Offering a working vintage 1940's Western Electric 639B combination Ribbon/Dynamic Microphone. These "Birdcage" mics were later sold under the Altec brand in 1947 when Uncle Sam broke up Western Electric. (Note, the front badge says "Altec", but the mic itself is embossed under "Western Electric" production.)

This legendary piece of audio history has captured the essence of sound across decades, from the early days of TV and film. It combines both dynamic and ribbon elements, offering unmatched versatility in capturing a wide range of frequencies with clarity and warmth, allowing musicians and audio engineers to switch between different pickup patterns, providing flexibility whether you're recording vocals, instruments, or ambient environments.

The 639B has been restored with new ribbon, screen cloth and paint, and presents very nicely.  A six-position screwdriver actuated switch allowed the two elements to be used separately or combined to produce a variety of directional patterns. (Check the voice sample provided on the listing video.) Aside from voice, these microphones are great on drums, acoustic or guitar amps, horns, and much more!

There are no broken or cracked ribs (which can be so common on these 639's,) nor have there been any physical repairs. These mics are uniquely attractive in a classic style, includes the Coles adapter connecting cable terminating with a male XLR plug, and also has the universal 5/8" mic stand thread. This sale also includes the heavily-weighted iron desk stand. The mic with stand shown is 14" tall.
