WHAT IS TRACTION THERAPY?
A Traction is an effective treatment option that utilizes a longitudinal force applied to the spinal column. This technique pulls parts of the spine in opposite directions to stabilize or reposition damaged areas. The force is typically administered to the skull through weights or a fixation device, requiring the patient to either remain in bed or be fitted with a halo vest.
This manual technique is specifically designed to relieve pressure on affected vertebral discs that cause pain. By stretching the spine, traction effectively reduces pressure on these discs, significantly alleviating discomfort.
Cervical traction can and should be performed using various methods, including manual, mechanical, or motorized techniques with a head or chin sling, or through a supine posterior distraction unit. Mechanical cervical traction is commonly applied in the supine position, which minimizes the weight on the head while managing frictional resistance. This position not only enhances patient control over their head movement but also offers greater comfort.
In contrast, lumbar traction demands a considerably greater force to achieve distraction of the vertebral segments compared to cervical traction. Common traction systems include setups with a thoracic or chest belt combined with a pelvic belt, inversion devices, split traction tables, or auto traction tables. Split traction tables consist of a mobile half and a stationary half, while auto traction tables are designed to allow both segments to move, controlled by the patient. In this arrangement, the patient can effectively find the most pain-free position and perform active traction by pulling on an overhead bar. The patient then utilizes their feet to activate a bar, alternating between compressive and distracting forces to maximize the treatment's benefits.
