I Found the Following on the Internet:
David Glasgow Farragut (1801–1870)
was a US naval officer who became the first full admiral in the United
States Navy, famous for his leadership during the Civil War. Born near
Knoxville, he joined the Navy at age nine and served with distinction in the
Mexican-American War before famously leading the capture of New Orleans and
securing Mobile Bay for the Union. Despite growing up in the South, he remained
loyal to the Union during the Civil War, moving his family north just before
the conflict began.
Early life and career:
Born on July 5, 1801, near Knoxville,
Tennessee. Joined the US Navy as a midshipman at the age of nine, under the
guardianship of David Porter, with whom he changed his name.
First saw combat at age eleven and
commanded a vessel at twelve.Served with distinction in the Mexican-American
War.
Civil War leadership:
Born in Tennessee and lived in
Norfolk, Virginia, but chose to fight for the Union, considering secession
treason. Commanded the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron and led his fleet in a
daring passage through Forts Jackson and St. Philip to capture New Orleans in
1862. Achieved his most famous victory at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864,
where he defeated the Confederate ram CSS Tennessee and secured the port for
the Union.
Post-war and legacy:
Commanded the European Squadron in
1867. Was promoted to Admiral in 1866, the first person to hold the rank. Died
on August 14, 1870.
His leadership highlighted the
