This is an Authentic Ritual Use face mask from the Baule (Baoulé) people of the Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire). This specific form represents the Kpan, the senior female spirit and the most prestigious figure in the day-long Goli masquerade.

Unlike more common "decorative" versions, this mask shows the structural hallmarks of a traditional ceremonial object. The interior is deeply hollowed with clear adze-cut marks, and the weight of the hardwood (approx. 1.25 lbs) is consistent with the durable species selected by tribal carvers for longevity. The mask features a striking green polychrome patina, a color traditionally associated with the forest and the spirit world in modern Baule contexts.

The face is masterfully stylized with a high, domed forehead, heavy-lidded eyes accented with red pigment, and a refined, tapered chin. Traditional scarification marks are present on the cheeks and forehead. This piece was formerly part of a private collection and includes a sturdy metal mounting bracket on the reverse for wall display.
