engraving antique de Botanique (1719 - Joseph Pitton de Tournefort)
engraving Original (1719), Royal Printing, Paris. Plate from the Latin editio tertia publishing of the Rei Herbariae institution of Joseph Pitton of Tournefort, the founding work of the classification by genres, abundantly cited and used by Linné. Copper after Claude Aubriet (botanist - illustrator of the king's garden). Authentic copy. Guaranteed authenticity. This engraving presents the reproductive and foliar elements of the genus Pinus (pin). There is a large ovoid female cone composed of tight ovuliferous scales, each finely hated scales to make the texture and overlap of the strata; Immature fruiting is represented in lateral view and a group of elongated male micro-coated appears in the upper position. On the right are detailed two long and linear needles, isolated to show the foliar morphology (beam of needles), and dissected elements - seeds and wing appendages - are represented to illustrate the anemochore dispersion typical of pine seeds. The board highlights the relevant anatomical vocabulary: Strobile (cone), ovuliferous scales, winged seed (samare) and needle booklet, useful information in descriptive botany and coniferous taxonomy. (Plate 355)
Dimensions: 24 x 16 cms
Thank you for looking at the photos to identify the flaws of the paper: old and fine laid paper, with a certain number of possible defects (stains, folds, tears, gaps ...).
This engraving will interest collectors and lovers of ancient botanical planks as well as naturalists and dendrologists looking for anatomical representations of the genus Pinus. It provides visual documentation on the reproductive and foliar structures of the pines - female and male cones, ovuliferous scales, winged seeds and beaming needles - useful for the comparative study of conifers, taxonomy and the history of botanical illustration. She will also be able to interest science historians and decorators seeking authentic pine, strobile and conifer anatomy iconography. (Pinus (pin))
