engraving antique de Botanique (1719 - Joseph Pitton de Tournefort)
engraving Original (1719), Royal Printing, Paris. Plate from the Latin editio tertia publishing of the Rei Herbariae institution of Joseph Pitton of Tournefort, the founding work of the classification by genres, abundantly cited and used by Linné. Copper after Claude Aubriet (botanist - illustrator of the king's garden). Authentic copy. Guaranteed authenticity. This engraving shows a series of dissected elements and isolated plant objects for Hedera (ivy) and Vitis (vine). For Hedera are represented the floral elements (corolla and stamens) as well as spherical fruits and section segments highlighting the seeds; We clearly distinguish the floral parts and the peduncle. For Vitis are represented floral buds, small inflorescences in cluster, whole berries and in section revealing flesh and seeds, as well as isolated pedicels and chalices. The whole insists on the morphology of the organs (limb, petiole, inflorescence, pericarp) and on the reproductive characters useful in taxonomy and ampelography. (Plate 384)
Dimensions: 24 x 16 cms
Thank you for looking at the photos to identify the flaws of the paper: old and fine laid paper, with a certain number of possible defects (stains, folds, tears, gaps ...).
This engraving will interest lovers of botanical iconography and researchers in history of natural sciences in search of detailed plates on ivy (Hedera) and the vine (Vitis). It will also seduce collectors specializing in ancient botanical planks, as well as enthusiasts of ampélography and plant morphology wishing to study the representation of flowers, fruits and seeds. The illustration provides relevant elements for the taxonomic description and the observation of reproductive structures, useful for the documentation of historical herbaries and the consultation in systematic botany. (Hedera (Lierre) & Vitis (vine))
