Józef Antoni (Joseph-Antoine) Poniatowski, born May 7, 1763 in Vienna and died on October 19, 1813 in Leipzig, Polish prince, nephew of the last king of Poland, was the military hero of the nation and commander of the army of the Duchy of Warsaw. Officer first in the Habsburg service, he joined the Polish cause, fights in 1792, then organized the army of the Duchy (1807) and led the campaigns of 1809 against Austria (taken from Sandomierz and Krakow). In Leipzig, Napoleon made the marshal of France on the battlefield (October 16, 1813) for his relentless resistance; Wounded, he covers retreat and drowns in the White Elster. Symbol of loyalty and bravery - "the Polish bayard" -, it crystallizes the Polish national gesture under the imperial eagle.
