- Michael Gregory, who earlier in his career (when he was Michael Gregory Jackson) played avant-garde jazz, by 1982 was heading in a much more pop-oriented direction. His debut as a leader, The Way We Used to Do, has Gregory as the only performer on overdubbed guitars and vocals. His guitar playing was still fairly adventurous on the instrumentals, but he was also featuring his high-voiced vocals on half of the selections. While quite musical, Gregory's folk/rock singing is an acquired taste. None of the ten songs on this program caught on, and the disc has since become quite obscure, more notable for Gregory's originality than for being memorable. ~ Scott Yanow
