Presenting one of the Rarest and Most Unusual Vintage Masonic Shriners Two-Tier Jewel. There are three elements here; Scimitar Sword, Blue Silken Ribbon, an Ornate Rococo Frame featuring a Skull and Crossed Bones. Skulls, which represent mortality are a common symbol in Freemasonry, but we have never seen one in connection with the Shriners. Yet Shriners had a wide variety of imagery and many are not well known today. In their very earliest days, the color of Shriner Fez hats was white, but it was quickly replaced by red. This is very outstanding gem! It glows and shines beautifully. Silver in color, we have not had it tested. If it has actual silver or is a silver colored type of metal, we do not know. But it is a scarce item. We have never seen another like it. The backside has an unusual hallmark, which consists of Initials (hard to read), Globe and Crescent Moon. The maker may have specialized in Shriner jewelry. In very good vintage condition with only minor expected surface wear. No problems. Measures approximately 4 ½ inches in length. ANCIENT ARABIC ORDER OF THE NOBLES OF THE MYSTIC SHRINE
The first Shriner Temple, "Mecca Temple" was organized in 1872 in New York by Dr. Walter Fleming, a Physician and Broadway Comedian William (Billy) Florence. Memorabilia from the Shrine is particularly fun to collect and stands entirely on its own alongside many other fine Masonic artifacts. There is much glitter, humour and whimsy attached to many Shriner souvenirs. The Shriners are one of the most legendary Masonic based outfits. In all actuality, many Masons prefer saying that while the Shrine is indeed an organization made up of Masons, it is often incorrectly labeled as being a Masonic body. It is very different in numerous ways. Currently, the Shrine membership is open to any Master Mason. Back in the olden days, however, membership consisted of only the highest ranking Masons of both Rites, the Scottish and York (Knights Templar). The Shrine is primarily a "fun", social and philanthropic order. Still considered controversial by some (European Masonry forbids its members from joining), it is renowned and respected the world over for its many charitable deeds, not least being the splendid Shriner Hospitals found in numerous cities as well as Circuses which raise funds for many important causes. With such great philanthropy to their credit, the Shrine, nonetheless had a certain reputation for "boisterousness" and "revelry" which was brilliantly satirized in Hollywood movies such as "SONS OF THE DESERT" starring Laurel & Hardy (Oliver Hardy lent credibility to his role as he was actually both a Mason & a Shriner). Prestigious members included silent film stars and entertainers Harold Lloyd, Red Skelton, Roy Rodgers as well as Presidents Warren Harding, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Senator Barry Goldwater and many others.
