This pretty French Empire-period table serves dual purposes. As a coiffeuse, a dressing table, the hinged top revealing a mirror. As a travailleuse, a sewing / work table, with a removable, compartmentalised tray for threads and tools.
This two-tier use was fashionable among early 19th c French women's furniture. Elegant yet functional, designed for the private boudoir.
In excellent overall condition, this table stands on turned and tapered columnar legs with ormolu collars finely chased with anthemion and palmette motifs. The quarter-matched walnut veneer panels to the top surface display a wonderful polished patina, with no lifting of the veneer. The mirror appears to be original to the piece, whilst the drawer has been constructed using dovetail joints, always a sign of quality.
